Submarine telecommunications

An important part of our national infrastructure.

A critical piece of national infrastructure, undersea fibre optic cables support over 95 per cent of overseas internet and telephone traffic. The UK has a vital role in international communications and offers an important landing point between Europe and North America.

There are over 70 active telecommunication cable systems on the marine estate comprising over 250 individual cables. The waters off the South West of England are particularly important to the Atlantic and other international systems, and host a large number of cables. The ‘Useful documents’ module (opposite) contains a map of active cables in the UK.
