Montessori school refurbishment, Windsor

The building was formerly a public house which then fell in to disrepair following a number of restaurant tenants, and became vacant in 2014. After a public marketing exercise the Windsor Montessori House of Children was identified as the best tenant for long-term occupancy of the site, and planning permission for change of use was sought to enable the school. The building is now undergoing a major refurbishment utilising traditional materials, including bespoke timber windows and Welsh slate on the roof, to create a fit for purpose learning environment.

We actively manage our assets to ensure we attract the best tenants to our properties. The Windsor Montessori House of Children will be a terrific asset to the Windsor Estate and the wider community.”

The Montessori educational method aims to provide holistic, stimulating learning where children are free to explore their own development in the comfort of small groups, where they have access to hands on experience with a variety of subjects.  The school will initially be for early years learning.

Paul Sedgwick, Deputy Ranger of the Windsor Estate said: “We actively manage our assets to ensure we attract the best tenants to our properties. The Windsor Montessori House of Children will be a terrific asset to the Windsor Estate and the wider community, and we look forward to welcoming them later in the year.”

Menik Ellawala, Director of the Windsor Montessori House of Children, said: “I introduced Dr Maria Montessori’s method of education to Windsor in 1980 at the request of four parents. Thirty five years later my passion and vision for holistic education providing an aid to life from infancy has now become a reality for the parents and their children in Windsor and the surrounding areas.

"I am enormously grateful to The Crown Estate for enabling me to turn this excellent building into a new school. With our original school in Home Park, which will expand to include primary-aged children from September, parents now have the choice of two Montessori sites in beautiful settings, where they can support the development of their children.

"This wonderful opportunity fulfils my dream of carrying forward the legacy of Dr Maria Montessori, an education system that has successfully grown since 1907 to cover every corner of the world.”

The Windsor Estate covers 16,500 acres and includes Windsor Great Park, the Home Park of Windsor Castle, ancient woodland, extensive forests including Swinley and Bracknell Forests, and a diverse portfolio of commercial property including Ascot Racecourse, The Berkshire and Datchet Golf Courses, rural property including the Royal Farms, and over 500 residential properties.
