A fresh perspective

It is fabulous to see the feedback from a group of female students who spent the day at our offices as part of our Unlocking Property project, which aims to widen diversity within the professions we rely on as a business.

The girls from Hammersmith Academy and Ark Academy, Wembley, really seem to have been inspired by the event and their eyes opened to career possibilities. This is good news for them and for our sector’s diverse workforce of the future, with lots of evidence showing that more diverse companies tend to perform better commercially.

Here are some of my favourite student quotes from the event:

Usually all I hear about is: doctors, lawyers, and teachers ... there is a much bigger picture and other jobs important to society”

“A very good experience, which inspired me and opened my mind to different careers. It made me realise that engineering can be as much for women as for men. It brings a smile to my face to know that Alison Nimmo is the CEO of The Crown Estate and I feel very lucky to have met her and heard her story. I think this inspired many people, including me, to know that if you work hard and put the effort in you can be wherever you want to be. I was given insights into many different jobs, some of which I had never heard of before. Usually all I hear about is: doctors, lawyers, and teachers. But, after coming here, I’ve realised that there is a much bigger picture and other jobs important to society. Thanks to all the empowering women who made this day possible and great.”

I left feeling highly motivated to never give up because of where I’m from or cultural stereotypes that I may face ... maybe one day I will become a CEO of a major company”

“I met some very influential and inspirational women who have got to the top in their field through sheer hard work and determination. From accounting to property construction, these women have stamped their accomplishments all over an industry usually identified as predominantly male. It was a true eye opener for me. I came away with a real respect and informed understanding of different jobs. I left feeling highly motivated to never give up because of where I’m from or cultural stereotypes that I may face. It has inspired me to work hard to achieve everything I can to get far in life. Maybe one day I will become a CEO of a major company.”

There are endless opportunities out there just waiting for you to reach your hand out and grab them. Gender doesn’t define who you are – you define who you are”

“When we arrived at Regent Street, everywhere I looked I saw people of all genders, races and ages. As I stepped into the building, I was astounded and utterly speechless. Quite frankly, I was slightly intimidated by its elegance and authority. I was amazed to learn about what The Crown Estate does and how much it has an impact on our country. When I met Alison, CEO of The Crown Estate, eagerly I listened to her talk about her life and what she did to get to the position she is in today. An inspirational woman and a true role model that has influenced me to look at things in another, better perspective. My visit was truly eye opening and made me come to a realisation: there are endless opportunities out there just waiting for you to reach your hand out and grab them. Gender doesn’t define who you are – you define who you are.”

I am delighted that, through Unlocking Property, we’re inspiring the next generation and broadening our future talent pool, encouraging people to consider careers in the sectors that we operate in. Our people are as varied and amazing as our assets and activities, providing great opportunities to work with people from different backgrounds and experiences.

Thanks to everyone who supported the event and to our charity partner IntoUniversity, who helped organise the day.
