Case study: sustainable farming

Across communities, countryside, coast and seabed, we own and manage land for the benefit of the nation. We are an independent business sitting between the public and private sectors, acting in the national interest both today, and for future generations.

Food security and nature recovery are both urgent priorities for our nation and we are working hard to support both on our rural land.

We have made a significant commitment through the £20m Rural Environment Fund, increased from the initial £10m, to supporting farms in the transition to sustainable agricultural best practice, through ‘no regrets’ nature recovery work such as planting new hedgerows and woodlands, and creating ponds. As of January, 2025, over 280 hectares of new woodland and 300km of hedgerows have been planted.
